Nicola's Scarlet Letter Year

2013 will be a "red-letter" year for me as I turn 50 in February. It is going to be a special year both as a milestone in my life's journey and as I plan for the year to be filled with Scarlet Letter samplers.

Marion Robertson 1834

I am inviting you to join me on a Scarlet Letter Challenge and to enjoy the wonderful selection of reproduction samplers that Marsha has charted

Elizabeth Mitchell 1828

There are 326 samplers to choose from in various sizes and skill levels. The Scarlet Letter website rates each chart either beginner, intermediate through to advanced.

Grazing Sheep circa 1810

It is easy to participate, there are only two requirements:-

Start or resume a WIP of one or as many Scarlet Letter samplers as you like (each finish will give you another entry) between now and February 20th 2014, regularly sharing with me your starts, progress and finishes via a blog that is in the course of being set up.

Post about the challenge on your own blog or if you don't have a blog just pass on news about the challenge to a friend in another way.

Elizabeth Simon 1758

On February 20th 2014 I will draw seven names from a hat, there will be two first prizes of $50 vouchers for Scarlet Letter, one has very generously been sponsored by Marsha. In addition there will be 5 runner up prizes of Scarlet Letter charts of your choice.

Dorothy Walpole 1774

If you would like to take up the challenge and share my Scarlet Letter year leave a comment on this post and Jo will contact you about posting on the blog Nicola's Scarlet Letter Year If you are a non reply blogger please email me (at nicola.parkman@gmail.com) your email address.

If you haven't blogged before I will be happy to post your progress

Diligence

The Scarlet Letter website has an online shop where charts can be purchased or  a list of international suppliers can be found here. There is a UK retailer wye.co.uk and although they only show kits Dean will order the chart(s) for you.

Jane Atkinson 1780

I will be working on as many as I can from the charts in my stash, but which ones? It is so hard to decide - they are all wonderful.

Rachel Ayres 1829

I do hope that you will take up the challenge and share my passion for Scarlet Letter and reproduction samplers.

Oh me, please!!! lol! I don't know if I'll be able to stick to just Scarlet Letter samplers, but on the other hand I have so many, it might not be a problem! I'm working on a couple right now!! Yay! Thanks for doing this, Nicola. Such fun!!!

Oh this sounds wonderful and I've had a look through and with no real challenge set for next year I think I'll take part in this one, am I right in thinking I can just do however many I can in the year ? This I think would suit my time frame available at the moment...I will be blogging either later this week or early next week I will mention this challenge then. What an exciting idea.

Count me in! There are several SL pieces I've had in mind to start. This is just the incentive to get at least one of them underway.

Thanks for taking this on!

Hi Nicola: this is a definite YES from me! What a great idea: once 2013 is here I shall sort through some SL patterns I already have but have not yet sewn and get cracking - I love this sort of thing! x

Can I just say - me, too! I'm kitting up Ruth Bachelor so i can start her in January.

Hi Nicola!
Count me in too!
I'm not the quickest stitcher for sure, but I'll give it a whirl!

Oh I love SL charts. I seem to do so many of them. Ok count me in. I have to finish my Australian sampler first though. It will be interesting to see which one you pick. - Sandra.

Nicola, you have an absolutely beautiful blog and your work is amazing. I am not the fastest stitcher in the world but this is a way to think about getting back to Sarah Tatum and a few other SL charts I own, OK, I am in but really for the fun mainly, thank you, Giuseppina

Hi Nicola, What a fantastic idea and a wonderful way to celebrate your birthday year. Please count me in - despite my HAED and Tudor obsessions and all my other SALs, I am sure that I can fit in a Scarlet Letter Sampler somewhere. Now, I am going to have lots of fun trying to decide on which one as I do not have any of their designs - unless "And they sinned" which you so kindly gifted me is one - I will have to investigate tonight when I get home from work.

hugs, Kaye

Yes, I'd love to participate in the Scarlet Letter sampler challenge. I don't know if I'll start a new SL sampler but I have lots of started SL samplers to choose from... at the top of the list are Emma Miles, Rebecca Cullin, Jane Atkinson, Ann Smith and Elizabeth Sheffield.
What a fun idea... Thank You!

Ellen said...

Wow, gorgeous samplers! Love to join but not sure if I can stick to it. First I must get myself a SL sampler, don't think I have any in my stash ha ha! Thank you for this wonderful challenge!

Hi Nicola, Count me in too! It will be a lot of fun stitching along with you and everyone else. There are so many SL samplers I would love to do, I will have to start shopping :)
What a fun journey this will be! :)

I have been on a stitching slump this year. Am too tired to stitch and hope once my son is bigger, i will be more settled.

Have so many charts and kits with me - that i have mentally prepared not to get into new things, at least not yet!!

I love the samplers you have shown here, and 'Elizabeth Simon 1758' is tugging at my heart. Some other year, i should be doing one enormous reproduction sampler:)

Good luck with this endeavour, i am sure many ladies will join (i wish i could!).

Hi Nicola,

Count me in. I was going to start Ann Medd after the Victoria Alphabet, and I have Mary Hurst...as well as SDW. What a great incentive to start stitching through the stash!

Oh my gosh some of those are just gorgeous. I may have to give this some serious thought.
Funny you should mention Wye, I've just wasted 20 minutes drooling over those samplers when I'm meant to be printing out an order for Dean ;)

What a wonderful way to celebrate ypur birthday!
I have told Minid that I would do a Bristol sampler SAL with her.
Mine is MA Tipper. The pic on my blog header is part of her. She is a Bristol sampler. The only hard part is the 45ct linen and the size.
I hope that you have a lovely weekend and that your MIL is better!

I've just posted on my blog and mentioned that you were hosting this challenge Nicola. I placed an order for Dorothy Walpole last night as this design really caught my eye. I've never joined a challenge before but thought that it might be fun to try. I will have to wait for the chart to arrive and then order silks that I might not have so hopefully it won't take too long.

Angela said...

What a wonderful idea! The samplers look lovely, so I'll go and see if one of them "screams stitch me" :)

Nicola - thanks for stopping by - you make my second Cornish friend. I look forward to watching the progress of your challenge. As I've jumped 50, I can say it's not so bad. Happy Birthday soon!

What a lovely idea Nicola and a great way to celebrate your birthday.

I have just ordered mine:
http://www.wye.co.uk/view/Cross_Stitch_Kits/Scarlet_Letter_Samplers/18th_Century_English_Samplers/The_Seventen_Sailors_circa_1780/.

It will be a huge challenge for me as I am a complete novice but I am really excited about joining in - it will be such an achievement for me when I complete it. My 60th birthday is next year and it will be so nice to have something to mark the occasion too.

I guess my knitting stash will have to wait!

What a great idea! I'm very, very tempted to join you and by Dorothy Walpole :-)
I will browse the SL website to see what other tempting charts are there.

Turning 50 is not that bad, mine was last Christmas, and after all it's just a number :-)

I would love to join in and stitch Dorothy Walpole.

I've just spent hours on the website and there are dozens I want to stitch but for now I will stick with my first love and if I ever finsih Walpole I will start on the others :)

I live in NZ and it's close to Christmas so goodness knows how long it will take for the kit to get to me.

Hi Nicola

What a fabulous way to celebrate your 50th and to inspire others.

By chance I just found a local supplier of Scarlet Letter charts, so please count me in!

I love Dorothy Walpole, Mary Cooper and some of the miniature samplers are lovely too. Decisions, decisions.

I would love to join the SL SAL, Nicola....it would be a great incentive for me to jump into Jane Atkinson, which I bought earlier this year! Although I could be "Mother" to most of you as I turned 75 this year, I still
feel 50ish (sometimes 30ish, but
the bod says "uh,uh" so I feel I can keep up with you! Although
I am a blog "reader", I haven't
quite jumped into the fray yet.
My email is cdwatkins3733@att.net.

Oh my..everyone is joining this SAL. I'm knee deep in my Villages of HRH. But this is so tempting. I might take a peek at their website but otherwise I'd love to follow along with everyone's progress.

You know, I am also turning 50 next year (March). I started full time work early this year and this change in my life found me losing my stitching mojo. However I've been thinking about it endlessly of late and couldn't help feeling that I was reading this post of yours for a good reason. I think this challenge is just what I need. I would love to join if you'll have me. I deleted my old blog months ago (these2hands) but have started a new one as a result of this challenge. I'm excited and will go on over to the SL website and choose a chart.

Kim said...

I think I need to join in this endeavor! May be the kickstart I need to finish my SDW and get a few others completed!

Wonderful blog! Found you through Ann - I'd love to participate. I have had three Scarlet Letter pieces I have wanted to do and since I'm facing a milestone birthday in February, it seems like it was meant to be - plus it will be kick start I need (and a deadline!!)

Amazing idea Nicola and I would love to participate! Jo already sent me the invite...just need to be set up as a contributor. I'm going to stitch Hannah Brassington and, like you, Marion Robertson!! I'll need to purchase the materials for January! Can't wait to start!!! I love Elizabeth Mitchell and was going to get her too, but I can only manage two samplers at the moment. Love your choices!!!

Hi Nicola, I've been debating on whether to join in on this or not, I've got several samplers on my list for next year but haven't had any Scarlet Letter charts on that list. But, I've been wanting to stitch Dorothy Walpole and have her kitted up so I'm going to throw my name into the ring to play along with your Scarlet Letter challenge for next year. I'll be sharing my progress on my blog at www.stampwithjen.com. Thanks for hosting this, I'm looking forward to seeing lots of great samplers being stitched next year!!
